City Hall announces plans for redesign of Chinatown intersection
A new initiative called “Chinatown Connections,” funded by the city and state to the tune of $56 million, will see the renovation of Kimlau Square, the design of a privately funded Gateway Arch, and beautification of a street near the Brooklyn Bridge. Mayor Eric Adams emphasized the city’s commitment to investing in high-profile projects in addition to $11.5 million already allocated by the state.
The plan seeks to increase public space, address longstanding traffic issues, and revitalize a neighborhood that has faced economic challenges in recent years. Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez highlighted the lack of investment in public space in the area, stating that this will change with the new initiative.
The announcement has sparked debate within the community, with some questioning the need for a Gateway Arch. However, city officials have pledged to prioritize community engagement, with plans to create a working group with local residents and leaders to guide the design and implementation of the plan.
The $44.3 million in city funding will be combined with $11.5 million in state grants to carry out the projects. A traffic study will also be conducted to expand Kimlau Square and improve traffic safety, with construction set to take place from 2027 to 2029. Additionally, plans to reopen car traffic on Park Row, which has been closed since 9/11, are being evaluated.
In the meantime, the city will launch a street improvement project on Park Row, between the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge and Kimlau Square, with the goal of beautifying the area and attracting more foot traffic and tourists to Chinatown.
The revitalization efforts are set to commence with traffic studies and community engagement meetings in the coming weeks, as City Hall and local leaders aim to collaborate on the renovation and rejuvenation of this historic area in Manhattan.
