Congestion Pricing Launched in New York City: Drivers Offered Discounts and Alternatives
New York City has officially implemented congestion pricing, charging drivers $9 to enter Manhattan’s Congestion Relief Zone during peak hours. As part of this initiative aimed at reducing traffic and promoting public transit usage, several discounts and alternatives are available for drivers seeking to save on toll fees.
Drivers can efficiently navigate the new toll system by using E-ZPass, which only charges the standard $9 fee. In contrast, drivers who opt for mail payment will face higher tolls, approximately $13.50. Those with E-ZPass can further benefit from a $3 credit when using the Holland, Hugh L. Carey, Lincoln, or Queens-Midtown tunnels to enter Manhattan during peak times.
To register for E-ZPass, New York drivers can sign up online or over the phone, while New Jersey residents also have similar options. E-ZPass not only simplifies toll payments but also offers discounted plans for commuters and low-emission vehicles. Drivers are reminded to ensure their account information, including linked license plates, is current.
For out-of-state drivers, E-ZPass compatibility varies by state. It operates in several states including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and more, with plans to expand into Georgia.
In an effort to assist commuters adapting to congestion pricing, ride-share giant Lyft is offering a $1.50 credit for trips starting, ending, or passing through the Manhattan zone. This promotion, aimed at easing the transition, will be active throughout January 2023, where credits can be applied to future Lyft or Citi Bike rides.
As New York City enters this new phase of traffic management, both drivers and riders are encouraged to take advantage of the available discounts and options that help mitigate congestion-related costs.
