Law enforcement authorities conducted a successful drug bust in the Bronx, seizing 20 pounds of fentanyl and arresting two individuals on Tuesday. The operation involved a task force comprised of the New York Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and New York state troopers. The raid, which took place on the first floor of a building in Belmont, resulted in the recovery of over 8kg of fentanyl in brick form and containers. Ten people, including eight first responders and two civilians, suffered minor injuries during the operation.
The authorities were tipped off after conducting undercover purchases of drugs from the apartment. The FDNY’s HazMat team and fire personnel were called in to respond to a container filled with loose powder that emitted a strong odor. Prior to the bust, two daycare facilities in the building were evacuated.
Building tenants and the superintendent expressed shock at the news of the drug operation in their midst. The superintendent noted that the tenant in the first-floor apartment where the bust took place was quiet and did not have much visitor traffic. Tenants in the building had complained of trespassers and shootings in the area, with management allegedly failing to address their concerns.
Overall, the successful drug bust was a result of the collaborative effort of law enforcement agencies to combat drug trafficking in the Bronx. The operation highlighted the dangers posed by the illicit drug trade and the need for continued vigilance in tackling this issue.
