German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed confidence in developing a joint strategy for Ukraine with US President-elect Donald Trump after a phone call, emphasizing the need for Ukrainian input. Scholz ruled out sending Taurus missiles to Ukraine, despite opposition leader Friedrich Merz’s suggestion. Recent Russian attacks in Zaporizhzhia and Kryvyi Rih resulted in casualties, drawing condemnation from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy may meet with Trump during a trip to Paris, amid calls for increased European defense spending in response to the Russian threat.
The EU’s new defense chief, Andrius Kubilius, stressed the need for a significant increase in defense spending to counter the Russian threat. Kubilius pointed out the potential deployment of Russia’s Oreshnik missile in Belarus next year, following a mutual defense pact signed by Putin and Lukashenko. Putin mentioned the Oreshnik missile’s successful test in combat conditions in Ukraine last month.
Efforts are being made for Zelenskyy to meet with Trump during the Notre Dame Cathedral reopening in Paris, with recent meetings between Ukrainian officials and Trump’s security advisers. While European defense measures are considered vital to address the threat posed by Russia, Kubilius emphasized the need for sustained investment and industry readiness for a potential long-term conflict. The situation remains tense between Ukraine, Russia, and the international community, highlighting the importance of diplomatic efforts and strategic planning to ensure regional stability and security.
