The study, conducted by a team of researchers from the University of Exeter Business School and Erasmus University Rotterdam, surveyed over 1,200 employees from a variety of industries.
The researchers defined job insecurity as the perceived risk of losing one’s job due to factors such as economic conditions or changes within the organization. They found that employees who felt uncertain about the future of their employment were more likely to engage in behaviors such as lying, cheating, and stealing in the workplace.
According to lead researcher Dr. Ilke Inceoglu, job insecurity can create a sense of powerlessness and fear among employees, leading them to take unethical shortcuts in an attempt to protect themselves.
