Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced movie mogul currently in city custody following the overturning of his 2020 rape conviction, was hospitalized on Monday after an alarming blood test result. According to his attorney, Imran Ansari, he was sent to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan for immediate medical attention. This comes just a week after Weinstein filed a legal claim alleging substandard medical care at Rikers Island.
Weinstein’s attorneys accused the city of providing him with inadequate medical care for his conditions, including chronic myeloid leukemia and diabetes. Ansari described the conditions at Rikers Island as unsanitary and compared the jail complex to a “gulag.” Last week, a federal judge found the city had placed its inmates in “unconstitutional danger” and cleared the way for a possible federal takeover of the jail system.
Weinstein’s publicist, Juda Engelmayer, also spoke out against the mistreatment, stating that Weinstein, who is suffering from various illnesses, has been deprived of the medical attention he deserves. The situation, according to Engelmayer, constitutes cruel and unusual punishment.
The case against Weinstein is set to be retried in 2025. Despite denying any wrongdoing, Weinstein continues to face legal battles as his health condition remains a concern. The mistreatment of detainees at Rikers Island has raised significant concerns, and this latest incident involving Weinstein highlights the ongoing issues within the jail complex.
