Yankees Fans Turn to Babe Ruth for World Series Luck
As the New York Yankees vie for the championship against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series, fans are returning to a beloved tradition: making offerings at the grave of baseball legend Babe Ruth. Located in Westchester County, Ruth’s gravesite has long been a shrine for Yankees supporters, who believe his spirit can influence the team’s fortunes.
Superfan Pete Lombardo, dressed in full Ruth regalia, visited the cemetery with his family, hoping to "wake the spirits" of the iconic slugger. “I was joking on the ride up, saying I’d sacrifice my first-born for the Yankees to win," Lombardo said, casting a glance at his 22-month-old daughter. Patriotic mementos left at the grave reflect fans’ devotion; scenes now include over 50 baseballs, whiskey bottles, and even a mini pumpkin inscribed with “Go Yankees 2024.”
Babe Ruth, who passed away in 1948, is often credited with casting a magical aura over the Yankees franchise. Allegedly spurred by their infamous trade in 1919, the “Curse of the Bambino” seemed to haunt the Red Sox for decades, leading to a rivalry that fans still commemorate today. Despite the curse being broken in 2004 when the Sox finally triumphed over the Yankees, loyal fans remain undeterred, ready to evoke Ruth’s spirit to seek victory.
Lombardo’s visit, he claims, was a perfect way to merge family fun with baseball heritage, incorporating a trip to a pumpkin patch on the way. “Babe Ruth’s a legend,” he emphasized. As the World Series heats up, fans continue their rituals at Ruth’s grave, fervently hoping for a championship run and the intervention of the Sultan of Swat.
