Tragedy struck on Thursday night in Manhattan when a fire broke out inside a NYCHA complex, resulting in the death of a 64-year-old man. The fire ignited on the ninth floor of an apartment on Columbus Ave. near W. 104th St. in the Frederick Douglass Houses on the Upper West Side around 9:16 p.m. Firefighters were called to the scene and were able to contain the blaze to the single apartment, extinguishing it just before 10 p.m.
Rescuers found the man unconscious and suffering from smoke inhalation in the smoldering apartment. They performed CPR on him before transporting him to St. Luke’s Hospital in critical condition. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, the man succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
