Randy Mastro removes himself from contention for NYC’s top legal position

Randy Mastro has withdrawn his nomination for corporation counsel by Mayor Eric Adams following opposition from members of the City Council due to his right-wing clients and causes. Mastro’s decision comes after facing tough questioning during a hearing that suggested rejection was imminent. The role of corporation counsel is highly prestigious, overseeing a team of lawyers who defend the city in civil cases.

Mastro criticized the fairness of the hearing and accused the Council of engaging in partisan politics. Mayor Adams expressed disappointment in the Council’s handling of the nomination process, suggesting that politics had overshadowed Mastro’s qualifications for the role. City Council spokesperson Julia Agos noted that concerns about Mastro’s record had been raised early on, leading to the intense scrutiny during the hearing.

Despite Adams’ initial support for Mastro, the nominee faced significant opposition from progressive councilmembers since April. Prominent supporters, including former Gov. David Paterson, had campaigned behind the scenes to sway councilmembers in Mastro’s favor, but ultimately, he decided to withdraw his name from consideration.

The withdrawal marks the end of a contentious episode that has strained the relationship between Adams and the City Council, who have clashed on various issues in recent months. The Council now looks forward to working with the administration to nominate a candidate who can unify officials and gain widespread support.
