Howard University has decided to revoke Sean “Diddy” Combs’ honorary degree and cut all financial ties with him following the release of a video showing his brutal assault on his then-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, in a Los Angeles hotel in 2016. The university’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously to accept Combs’ return of the honorary degree and directed the administration to terminate all agreements and return his contributions. In a statement, the university explained that Combs’ behavior is incompatible with its core values and beliefs, particularly its opposition to all acts of interpersonal violence.
The video footage released by CNN shows Combs chasing Ventura, grabbing her, throwing her to the ground, kicking her, and dragging her back to the hotel room. Ventura had filed a lawsuit against Combs, alleging physical and sexual abuse during their 10-year relationship. Combs later released an apology video acknowledging his actions and seeking professional help for his behavior.
While the LA County District Attorney’s Office cannot bring charges against Combs due to the statute of limitations, he is facing lawsuits from six other individuals making similar claims. Additionally, Combs is the subject of a federal sex trafficking investigation with raids conducted at his homes in LA and Miami. Despite these allegations, Combs has not been charged with a crime.
Ventura, who reached a settlement with Combs after filing her lawsuit, expressed gratitude for the public’s support and assured her fans that she is on a healing journey. The university’s decision to revoke Combs’ honorary degree marks another significant consequence of the video’s release and the allegations against the music producer.
