Police say NYPD officers fatally shoot man who charged at them with knife.

In a tragic incident in Queens on Friday, NYPD officers were forced to fatally shoot a man who charged at them with a knife. The officers responded to a report of an assault in an apartment building in Rego Park, where they encountered a 46-year-old man armed with a knife. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, the man allegedly charged at the officers, prompting them to use lethal force.

Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey explained that the officers fired approximately four shots at the man, striking him, while a sergeant discharged his Taser. Despite efforts to save his life, the man was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The incident occurred during a family gathering, where a dispute led to violence, including the stabbing of a woman who was taken to the hospital with at least two stab wounds.

Neighbors expressed shock at the crime, highlighting the rarity of such incidents in their community. The officers involved in the shooting were also sent to the hospital for evaluation. The NYPD has initiated an internal investigation to determine the justification for the use of force. The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in responding to violent situations, even in typically quiet neighborhoods.
