Witness in trial claims accused Jam Master Jay killer bragged about being willing to kill him again

A former roommate of a man accused of killing hip-hop icon Jam Master Jay has testified about the suspect bragging that he wanted to “kill him again” about two years after the murder. Cherubin Bastien, the witness, testified in Brooklyn Federal Court that he rented a room from Karl Jordan, who goes by the nickname “Little D,” in his father’s house in Queens. Jordan is accused of shooting the Run-DMC co-founder in the head at Mizell’s music studio in 2002 along with co-defendant Ronald “Tinard” Washington.

Bastien, who was an everyday heroin user in 2004 when he lived with Jordan, testified that the topic of Jam Master Jay came up during a trip to Manhattan when Jordan said, “If I got to kill him, I’ll kill him again.” The witness also claimed that Jordan referenced the DJ’s murder during an argument with a woman, saying, “I’ll do you like him, like Master Jay.”

The jury also heard from Eric James, a close friend of Mizell, who admitted that the hip-hop icon occasionally sold drugs. James testified that Mizell had been involved in a drug deal involving Jordan and Washington, and he recalled a phone call that sounded agitated and mentioned the name “Tinard” just days before the murder.

According to prosecutors, Jordan and Washington killed Mizell because he cut them out of a 10-kilo drug deal, which was confirmed by a Baltimore dealer who refused to do business with Mizell if he was working with Washington. Bastien shared details about living with Jordan and was provided with witness assistance money starting in May 2021 for rent, food, and other necessities after being contacted by law enforcement officials.

The testimonies from the former roommate and close friend provide a glimpse into the alleged drug deal and relation to the murder of Jam Master Jay. The trial is ongoing in Brooklyn Federal Court as the jury weighs the evidence presented by the prosecution and the defense.
