Large variety of animals, including rare and endangered species, confiscated from Long Island residence

Long Island man faced thousands in fines after having 100 animals, including an ostrich and other endangered species, in his home. The animals were found in the basement and backyard by law enforcement agencies, leading to multiple violations against 32-year-old Matthew Spohrer. The investigation began after an unlicensed exhibitor displayed the animals at a festival. Humane Long Island called the situation disturbing and an act of cruelty, while the Nassau County SPCA said that although the animals were well cared for, it was illegal and dangerous. The investigation is ongoing, and the animals are being placed in the care of appropriate facilities. The man declined to comment to Newsday.
