Italian-American Congressional candidate Tom Suozzi has accused his opponent, Republican Mazi Pilip, of using anti-Italian stereotypes. In the face of comments from Pilip calling Suozzi the “godfather of the border crisis,” leaders from various Italian-American groups have come out to support Suozzi and demand an apology from Pilip. Pilip’s campaign, however, doubled down on the accusations, saying that Suozzi lacks the spine to deal with the border crisis, and might be like the hapless Fredo from “The Godfather.” Suozzi addresses this during a press conference after being endorsed by gun safety groups. Pilip is backed by the Conservative Party, which opposes gun restrictions, while Suozzi was endorsed by gun safety advocates and is getting support from the left-leaning Working Families Party.
