Hanna Eshel, a sculptor who longed to be recognised for her art, met with an unexpected stroke of luck when a young singer and guitarist named Quinn Luke moved into her Manhattan loft in 2011. She was 85 at the time and had been waiting for recognition of her work for over 40 years. Luke, who could not find any information about Eshel’s art outside of her private world, moved in and after getting to know her, realized that they enjoyed the same qualities in art. Eshel’s long and difficult journey as an artist began when she was born in Jerusalem in 1926 and faced ethnic violence and the threat of a Nazi attack. The upheaval in Israel convinced her to shed her family name and pursue her career in Paris. After getting married and having a son, she continued to face discouragement and criticism of her art. Her move to Carrara, Italy, where she worked with marble and ended her marriage, allowed her to come into her own as a full-fledged artist. Eventually, Eshel made it to New York City, where she met Luke and was finally able to share her art. Hanna Eshel remained in the loft until her death at the age of 97 in September 2021. Her life can be traced through her arduous journey as an artist and her eventual discovery and recognition by the world, at the end of her long and difficult career.
