World champion cyclist Rohan Dennis admits to lesser charge in connection to his wife’s death

Former world champion cyclist Rohan Dennis has reached a plea deal with prosecutors following the death of his wife, Australian Olympian Melissa Hoskins. The 34-year-old Dennis appeared in Adelaide Magistrates Court to plead guilty to a charge of dangerous driving causing death, which could result in a maximum sentence of seven years in prison. Dennis was arrested after his wife was struck by his vehicle in front of their home in Adelaide in December 2023, resulting in her death at the hospital.

Dennis, who has two children with Melissa, was released on bail and committed to the District Court for sentencing on January 24. The sentencing hearing will take place next month. Melissa Hoskins was a successful cyclist who competed in the 2012 and 2016 Olympics on the track in the team pursuit. Dennis, a retired cyclist, has won two world titles in the road time trial and has Olympic medals to his name as well.

The couple, who got engaged in 2017 and married in 2018, had a tragic turn of events leading to Melissa’s death, prompting Dennis to negotiate a plea deal with prosecutors. The details of the plea deal were not disclosed, but Dennis has taken responsibility for the charge and will face the consequences when sentenced next month.
