Queens Lawmaker Suggests Pointing Lasers at Cameras to Protest Congestion Pricing

Queens Lawmaker Suggests Use of Laser Pointers Against MTA Congestion Toll Cameras

In a controversial statement, City Councilmember Vickie Paladino, a Republican representing parts of northeast Queens, has suggested New Yorkers use laser pointers to damage cameras enforcing the MTA’s newly implemented congestion pricing tolls. Paladino took to social media platform X, claiming a “high-powered green laser pointer” could destroy the sensors of toll cameras, encouraging users to avoid targeting the devices directly to prevent permanent damage.

Her comments, made on the launch day of the MTA’s congestion pricing initiative—which imposes a $9 fee on vehicles entering Manhattan’s southern region during peak hours—have drawn criticism. Highlighting a video of vigilantes in London damaging license plate readers associated with their own congestion charge, Paladino ominously warned that such actions could occur in New York as well.

MTA Chair Janno Lieber condemned Paladino’s remarks as “unfortunate,” stating that it is shocking for an elected official to encourage illegal behavior that harms public resources. Furthermore, selling or giving laser pointers to minors is illegal in New York City, and intentionally damaging public infrastructure can lead to criminal charges.

The MTA’s sophisticated tolling system, involving cameras and E-ZPass readers, relies on infrared technology rather than flash photography, making it unclear whether it is susceptible to laser interference. To date, the MTA has reported no incidents of damage to its toll cameras since the system’s activation.

Paladino, previously known for her disruptive behavior at local government meetings, has not yet commented further on the backlash from her posts. Recent investigations have pointed out similar incidents involving laser pointers directed at aircraft landing at JFK Airport, which have raised safety concerns for pilots.
