US pledges nearly $1 billion in aid to Ukraine amidst ongoing conflict with Russia

The Pentagon announced a $988 million aid package for Ukraine, which includes new arms and equipment for their ongoing war with Russia. The package will be used to purchase ammunition for the HIMARS system, drones, equipment, and spare artillery parts. This aid almost cuts in half the more than $2 billion available through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. President-elect Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Paris, with Zelenskyy thanking Trump for his resolute support. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin spoke at the Reagan National Defense Forum in California, where he emphasized the importance of peace through strength. Since 2022, the United States has provided over $62 billion in security assistance to Ukraine. The aid announcement comes as President Biden’s administration nears its end, and as global leaders continue to seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
