Robbie Keane, the former Republic of Ireland footballer, is considering a return to coaching in MLS after leading Maccabi Tel Aviv to success in Israel. Keane won the Israeli Premier League title, the Toto Cup, and reached the round of 16 in the UEFA Conference League during his brief tenure. Keane, who retired from playing in 2018, has completed his UEFA Pro coaching license and is now ready to take on a head coaching role in MLS or Europe.
Currently, there are five coaching vacancies in MLS, providing potential opportunities for Keane to make his return. His experience as a player-coach at Indian Super League team ATK and assistant roles with the Irish national team, Middlesbrough, and Leeds United, has prepared him for a head coaching position.
Despite his success in coaching, Keane faced challenges during his time at Maccabi Tel Aviv, including safety concerns due to the geopolitical situation in the region. His wife Claudine expressed worries about their safety, highlighting the risks associated with working in a volatile environment.
Keane recently witnessed his former team, the LA Galaxy, win its sixth MLS Cup title, where he saw forward Dejan Joveljic perform his signature cartwheel and roll celebration. Keane jokingly mentioned that he might use the same celebration if he becomes an MLS head coach.
Overall, Keane’s potential comeback to coaching in MLS has generated excitement and interest, and fans are eager to see him back on the sidelines, possibly bringing his iconic goal celebration with him.
