European scientists discover new aggressive predator hornet species

Researchers in Europe recently discovered the invasive hornet species vespa soror for the first time ever during an eco-monitoring program in Spain. The hornets prey on insects, butterflies, and geckos. The discovery was published in the journal “Ecology and Evolution.” While similar hornet species have been found in other areas, the scientists stress that terms like “Asian hornet” and “murder hornet” are not suitable to use when referring to vespa soror. The hornets are aggressive predators that attack honeybee hives and other pollinators, posing health risks due to their painful stings and potent venom. Their nests are usually underground and near large trees, which can complicate control measures. The researchers attribute the species’ introduction to Europe to globalization, making it easier for hornets to spread to new areas. They propose using the name avispón sóror as a more convenient and distinct term for the species. The discovery highlights the importance of studying insects for early detection of invasive species and biodiversity monitoring.
