According to newly released US Census data, more New Yorkers left the state than residents from any other state in the US last year. Over 480,000 people left, with only 300,000 new residents moving in to replace them. The state experienced a net migration loss of 180,000 people, although it was lower than the previous year.
Florida was the top destination for New Yorkers, with over 71,000 residents moving there in 2022. This movement is part of a larger trend of New Yorkers seeking more affordable and livable conditions. Governor Kathy Hochul’s office stated that efforts are being made to address the cost of living and make New York more appealing to residents.
While the migration loss is a positive sign for New York, there is still work to be done to improve affordability, traffic, pollution, and other issues that affect quality of life in the state. Other states that gained former New Yorkers included New Jersey, Pennsylvania, California, and Texas.
The Census data also highlighted states struggling with population loss and those gaining the most residents. States like North Dakota, South Carolina, and Vermont saw significant increases in residents, while New York, New Jersey, and Illinois experienced high rates of residents leaving. The data only takes into account residents moving within the country and does not include births or deaths.
