In a rare occurrence, both the Army and Navy football teams are undefeated and ranked this season, with a chance to be Playoff contenders in the College Football Playoff. The historic rivalry between the two service academies is even more intense this year as they both aim for a spot in the AAC championship game and potentially face each other twice in one season.
Army, led by QB Bryson Daily, has a perfect 7-0 record and leads the nation in rushing offense. Navy, standing at 6-0, is also in top form. The two teams currently occupy the top spots in the AAC standings, with a possibility of playing each other for the conference championship and then their annual rivalry game in back-to-back weeks.
Despite the high stakes and potential Playoff implications for the service academies, the traditional Army-Navy game on December 14 will not count towards the CFP. Selection Day for the Playoff is scheduled for December 8, leaving little time for preparation for a potential Playoff game. However, there is a significant chance, calculated at 29.6%, that either Army or Navy could make it to the Playoff based on their performances in the upcoming games.
Both teams have a rich history in football, with Army claiming national titles in the past and Navy also having a share of a national title in 1926. As the season progresses, the intensity of their rivalry and their fight for a spot in the Playoff intensifies, making this year’s Army-Navy game one to remember.
