Two members of the violent Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua were arrested in New York after allegedly murdering a man in Connecticut. Gregory Marlyn Galindez-Trias, 24, and Moises Alejandro Condollo-Urbaneja, 22, were caught by police in Rensselaer as they attempted to use a stolen credit card. The suspects were connected to the killing in Stamford and to the gang Tren de Aragua, which has become a point of controversy in the US presidential election.
Reports have emerged of Tren de Aragua activity in at least 10 states, with Republican candidate Donald Trump’s campaign using this as an example of “migrant crime”. However, residents and officials in places like Aurora, Colorado, where gang activity has been reported, deny Trump’s claims of a city being a “war zone”.
The Tren de Aragua gang is known for violent crimes such as shootings, smuggling guns, human trafficking, and robberies. In response to their activities, the Biden administration sanctioned the gang and offered rewards for the arrest of its leaders. Texas Governor Greg Abbott also declared the gang a Tier 1 threat, allowing for increased penalties for members.
The arrest of Galindez-Trias and Condollo-Urbaneja adds to the concerns surrounding Tren de Aragua in the US. The gang’s activities have prompted political statements and actions at both the federal and state levels, highlighting the ongoing issues posed by transnational criminal organizations like Tren de Aragua.
