Kremlin denies claims of North Korean soldiers aiding Russia in Ukraine

The Kremlin has denied reports that North Korea has sent soldiers to Ukraine to support Russian troops in the war, calling it “fake news.” The reports originated from The Guardian, which stated that North Korean military engineers and troops had been deployed to help Russia target Ukraine with ballistic missiles.
According to South Korean officials, North Korea is likely to deploy members of its armed forces to support Russia in Ukraine. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has become a key ally to Putin since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Despite facing setbacks in Ukraine, such as the Ukrainian armed forces fighting back with advanced weaponry and harsh sanctions imposed by the West, Russia has allegedly been relying on North Korean support. The US claims that North Korea has sent over 16,000 shipping containers containing munitions to Russia.
However, North Korea is also facing its own economic challenges and food security issues. Kim Jong-un visited Putin in September to discuss developing a space program and signed a mutual defense pact in June.
In January, the US National Security Council spokesperson stated that Russia had used ballistic missiles and launchers supplied by North Korea in Ukraine. Ukrainians on the ground have also found missile parts with Korean characters. The desperation to secure outside support for the war effort is evident in Russia’s use of North Korean weaponry, according to reports.
