Former President Donald Trump was briefed about specific threats posed by Iran and its alleged efforts to assassinate him. The briefing came after a Pakistani national with ties to Iran was charged with a murder-for-hire plot targeting a U.S. politician or government official. Iranian officials have denied involvement in such plots. U.S. intelligence officials have been warning for months that Iran is trying to meddle in the election to hurt Trump and help his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris. The FBI and other federal agencies have also warned about Iranian hackers attempting to interfere in the election. Iran has been targeting Trump administration officials in retaliation for the assassination of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani. The Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for engaging in terrorist plots including assassination attempts targeting former U.S. government officials and Iranian dissidents. Iranian officials have been charged with orchestrating murder-for-hire plots against former U.S. officials including John Bolton. The U.S. government remains focused on disrupting plots by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps and Quds Force. After the assassination of Soleimani, Iran’s religious leaders vowed to retaliate at a time and place of their choosing.
