Shane Bowen’s Giants defense overwhelmed by Commanders’ rushing attack in defeat

The New York Giants were defeated by the Washington Commanders 21-18 at Northwest Stadium, dropping to a 0-2 record for the season. Despite the addition of Shane Bowen as the new defensive coordinator, the Giants struggled to contain Washington’s running game, giving up 215 rushing yards in the game. Brian Robinson was particularly effective, rushing for 133 yards on 17 attempts.

Defensive end Brian Burns acknowledged Washington’s execution of the read option and RPO plays and credited the Commanders for their game plan. Giants linebacker Bobby Okereke expressed disappointment with the defense’s performance, citing missed tackles and explosive plays as areas for improvement.

Although the Giants had historically dominated the Commanders in recent seasons, Washington’s Austin Seibert sealed the victory with a game-winning 30-yard field goal as time expired. Seibert went 7-for-7 on field goals in his Washington debut. The Giants became the first team in NFL history to score three touchdowns, allow no touchdowns, and lose in regulation.

Wide receiver Malik Nabers had a strong performance for the Giants, with 127 receiving yards on 10 receptions. However, a blind-side hit from linebacker Frankie Luvu forced Nabers to exit the game temporarily for a concussion evaluation.

Despite their struggles, the Giants will look to bounce back in their next game and address the defensive issues that plagued them against the Commanders.
