A Connecticut lunch lady accused of sexually abusing a teenage boy has avoided trial by pleading guilty to two felonies. 43-year-old Marciann Mitchell of Ansonia was charged with second-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor, according to the New York Post.
The abuse allegedly began in 2019 while Mitchell was working at John Barry Elementary School in Meriden, where the victim was a student. The victim, who was 13 years old at the time, told police that Mitchell had engaged in sexual activity with him on multiple occasions.
Mitchell was initially arrested in 2020 after the victim came forward to authorities. She was released on bond but faced up to 20 years in prison if convicted at trial.
However, Mitchell recently reached a plea agreement with prosecutors, avoiding a trial. As part of the agreement, she pleaded guilty to the charges of second-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor. She will now face sentencing, where she could still potentially face prison time.
This case has raised concerns about the safety and security of students in schools, as Mitchell was in a position of trust as a lunch lady at the school. It also highlights the importance of reporting any suspicions of abuse to authorities, as the victim in this case was able to come forward and seek justice.
Overall, Mitchell’s plea deal brings a resolution to this troubling case, but it also serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and accountability in protecting children from potential predators.
