Airbnb announced this week that it is banning the use of all indoor security cameras in its listings globally, in an effort to prioritize privacy for its users. Previously, indoor security cameras were allowed in common areas with disclosure to guests, but the new update, effective April 30, prohibits their use entirely. The change comes amid concerns about privacy in vacation rentals, hotels, and other public spaces where hidden cameras have been found. Juniper Downs, Airbnb’s head of community policy and partnerships, stated that the decision was made in consultation with guests, hosts, and privacy experts to create clearer rules for the platform. Despite this ban, outdoor security cameras, noise monitors, and doorbell cameras will still be allowed, as long as hosts disclose their presence and do not monitor privacy-sensitive areas. With over 7 million listings worldwide, Airbnb is one of the leaders in the short-term rental market. The company’s updated policy aims to provide greater transparency and security for its users.
