New Yorkers should prepare for powerful winds on Monday, with gusts exceeding 50 mph that could blow people off their feet, according to the National Weather Service. NWS meteorologist Brian Ciemnecki warned that wind speeds will pick up on Sunday evening and escalate on Monday, potentially knocking people sideways if they are not prepared. The MTA has also issued a ban on empty tractor-trailers and tandem trucks on bridges due to the risk of trucks being blown over. Pedestrian walkways on certain bridges will also be closed during the windy conditions.
The windy weather follows a weekend of heavy rain, with 1.5 to 2 inches of precipitation soaking the city. Flight delays have been reported at JFK Airport, with roughly 12% of flights affected. In addition to the high winds, temperatures are expected to drop on Monday, with forecasts in the upper 40s but feeling much colder due to the gusts.
New Yorkers are advised to take precautions and secure any loose items that could be blown away by the strong winds. Stay tuned to local weather updates and be cautious when outdoors to avoid any potential dangers posed by the powerful gusts.
