Sweden has officially joined the NATO military alliance after facing delays from Turkey and Hungary since applying in May 2022. The decision comes amid rising concerns about Russia’s aggression in Europe, particularly following its invasion of Ukraine. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson emphasized unity and solidarity as Sweden’s guiding principles as a NATO member, pledging to share burdens, responsibilities, and risks with allies.
The move to join NATO marks a significant shift for Sweden, which has maintained neutrality for over 200 years. The decision to seek NATO membership was prompted by fears of a Russian military threat, particularly after Russian planes and submarines were detected near Swedish territory in recent years. Sweden’s accession to NATO will strengthen the alliance with cutting-edge submarines and domestically produced Gripen fighter jets. Despite the delays in ratification by Turkey and Hungary, Sweden’s accession to NATO has been hailed as a historic moment for the alliance and the transatlantic relationship. The country’s Minister for Employment and Integration described the move as the beginning of a new security policy era for Sweden, signaling a departure from its longstanding policy of neutrality. Swift action was taken following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with Sweden and Finland applying for NATO membership and Finland’s acceptance last year.
