15-year-old accused in shooting at Times Square charged as an adult, according to NYPD

A 15-year-old Venezuelan migrant has been arrested and charged as an adult after a shooting incident in a Times Square store on February 8, 2024. The teenager shot and injured a Brazilian tourist at a sneaker store and fired at law enforcement officers while fleeing the scene. He has been charged with attempted murder, assault, and weapons possession, among other charges. The teen was apprehended by New York City detectives and US Marshalls in Yonkers.

The shooting occurred after a store security guard approached the teen about a jacket he had in his bag. The suspect fired a shot at her, injuring the Brazilian tourist instead. During a foot chase with police through Times Square, the suspect fired at the pursuing officer, but did not hit anyone due to the crowded streets.

NYPD Police Commissioner Edward Caban described the shooting as reckless and emphasized the importance of maintaining public safety. The teen is also suspected of involvement in other incidents, including a gunpoint robbery in the Bronx. The teen is currently in custody and is expected to appear in court on February 13. Charges have also been filed against seven other individuals in connection with an assault on NYPD officers outside a migrant shelter in Times Square.
