Former teacher and convicted child rapist, Mary Kay Letourneau, has been in the media spotlight for many years due to her inappropriate relationship with her former student, Vili Fualaau. Now, Fualaau has spoken out against a new Netflix movie that he believes is a ripoff of his real-life story.
The film, titled “May December,” is about a relationship between a 36-year-old woman and a 13-year-old boy. Fualaau, who was sexually abused by his teacher Letourneau when he was only 12, says no one involved in the new movie reached out to him before its release. He expressed that he is offended by the lack of respect given to him and his story.
Despite being nominated for a Golden Globe, Fualaau criticized the lack of authenticity and detailed research put into the film. He filed for separation from Letourneau in 2017 after 12 years of marriage, but after Letourneau’s death in 2020 from colon cancer, Fualaau has reportedly “lost a piece of himself.”
Fualaau is open to the idea of movies being made about his life, but he feels that “May December” misses the mark. He says he loves movies that capture the essence and complications of real-life events, a sentiment that shows his willingness to work with writers and directors who can accurately capture the complexities of his experience.
Despite the film’s lack of respect and authenticity, it will be interesting to see how “May December” is received by the public and whether other individuals involved in similar real-life stories will have similar reactions.
