Menendez accused of accepting cash and gold in exchange for helping Qatari government

New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez has been hit with a superseding federal indictment charging him with taking bribes from the government of Qatar. The new indictment accuses him of taking money and gold bars in exchange for performing acts that would benefit the Qatari government and help another defendant get a multi-million-dollar investment. Menendez was already facing charges of conspiring to commit bribery and acting as a foreign agent in relation to the Egyptian government. These allegations have not been added to the formal counts he faces, but the added allegations tied to Qatar have brought new attention to the case. Menendez was previously the powerful chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee but remains a member of the committee. His attorneys did not respond to a request for comment. Menendez has previously stated that he has always been loyal to the United States and firmly believes he will be exonerated once all the facts are presented. He has also defended his record on Egypt and stated that the thousands of dollars in cash he withdrew from his savings were part of his legal income over 30 years. Overall, Menendez’s legal troubles continue to mount as he faces new allegations of bribery and corruption involving the government of Qatar.
