Kenyan athletes achieve double victory at inaugural Rome Half Marathon


Kenyan athletes Emmanuel Wafula and Nancy Sang dominated the first edition of the Rome Half Marathon, held on the central streets of Italy’s capital on Sunday. Wafula, 19, led the men’s race with a time of 59’58”, breaking away from his competitors and finishing strong near the Colosseum. Kenyan runners Gideon Kiprotich Rop and Antony Kimtai finished in second and third place, respectively. Italian runner Daniele D’Onofrio was the first Italian to cross the finish line in sixth place.

In the women’s race, Nancy Sang claimed victory with a personal best time. Her impressive performance in the 10km race last April ranked in the Top 30 world performances of the season. Sang finished the half marathon in 1h06’52”, ahead of Fantu Worku Taye and Evaline Chirchir.

Over 17 thousand participants took part in the race, running past historic landmarks in Rome. The event marked a successful debut for the Rome Half Marathon, showcasing the talent and speed of Kenyan athletes on the international stage. With Wafula and Sang’s impressive victories, the race is sure to become a highlight in the running calendar for years to come.
