Senate Democrats Call for Trump Nominees to Disclose Communications with Boris Epshteyn
Two top Senate Democrats, Senators Durbin and Whitehouse, are urging President-elect Donald Trump’s potential appointees to disclose any communications they had with Boris Epshteyn, a longtime Trump adviser, amid allegations that Epshteyn solicited financial payments in connection to securing government appointments. The senators have called for nominees to retain and provide communications with Epshteyn to the Senate Judiciary Committee, as well as testify about any discussions related to potential appointments in the administration.
The letter was addressed to Senators Graham and Grassley, with a copy sent to Trump’s transition team leader Susie Wiles. The senators expressed concerns about promises or assurances made to Epshteyn in exchange for his support. Epshteyn has denied the allegations, calling them false and defamatory.
Last week, attorney David Warrington reviewed the allegations against Epshteyn and recommended that Trump distance himself from Epshteyn. Additionally, internal strife within the Trump transition team over Epshteyn’s conduct regarding possible appointees has been reported, with former Governor Eric Greitens alleging pressure to engage in business dealings with Epshteyn.
The Trump transition team confirmed that a review of consulting agreements had been conducted and intended to move forward. While Senator Graham deferred comment to Senator Grassley, the Judiciary Committee chairman, it is expected that nominees will face questions about their communications with Epshteyn during confirmation hearings.
