The City Council, led by Speaker Adrienne Adams, has launched a new program to provide direct cash assistance to 161 expectant mothers who are homeless or at risk of homelessness over the next three years. The initiative, administered by the nonprofit The Bridge Project, aims to address the financial and health challenges faced by pregnant women without stable housing. The program will provide upfront and monthly payments to the expectant mothers, allowing them to cover expenses such as rent, food, and prenatal care.
During a press conference unveiling the program, Speaker Adams emphasized the importance of investing in the health and well-being of mothers and children, noting the long-lasting impact such initiatives can have on future generations. City Council Member Crystal Hudson praised the program for addressing child poverty and empowering expectant mothers to make their own financial decisions.
The initiative was made possible through council legislation passed in 2023, allowing the city to fund guaranteed income pilot programs, with $1.5 million allocated in the current city budget. The Bridge Project’s executive director, Laura Clancy, highlighted the positive outcomes reported by mothers who have already benefited from the program, including improved financial stability and increased time spent with their newborns.
The program represents a significant step towards supporting vulnerable expectant mothers and ensuring they have the resources to access essential services and support. By providing direct cash assistance, the City Council aims to create a more equitable and inclusive city for all residents.
