Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the shooting of an insurance CEO in midtown Manhattan, had no connection to UnitedHealthcare, despite his aspirations to target a CEO of a large corporation similar to the company. The NYPD has detailed the events leading up to and following the shooting, revealing that Mangione arrived in New York City from Atlanta and stayed at a hostel before the shooting. He was seen on security footage with an e-bike battery and was traced to have taken a cab to Washington Heights after the shooting. Police have discovered evidence linking Mangione to the scene, including fingerprints and ballistic evidence, as well as footage showing him purchasing water and a KIND bar before the shooting.
Mangione suffered a life-changing back injury in 2023, which may have influenced his actions leading up to the shooting. He was armed with a gun that was forensically linked to the shell casings found at the scene of the crime. Additionally, he was found with over $5,000 in cash at the time of his arrest, and his travels leading up to the shooting are still under investigation.
Despite the prior knowledge Mangione had of a conference taking place at the hotel where the shooting occurred, the motive behind targeting the insurance CEO remains unclear. Police have not been able to access Mangione’s cellphone or talk to his family, and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
