The federal government has deployed specialized radar technology to New Jersey to investigate reports of mysterious drones circling the skies. The drones have been spotted in New Jersey and surrounding areas, sparking concerns among lawmakers and the public. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy initially stated there was no known threat, but as sightings continued, pressure mounted for more transparency and action.
Two New Jersey assemblymembers announced the state would receive drone-specific radar technology to aid in the investigation. Mayors from 21 towns sent a letter to the governor urging statewide measures. Meanwhile, Congressional hearings revealed that federal agencies still do not know who is responsible for the drone activity. New Jersey officials, including Sen. Cory Booker and Rep. Josh Gottheimer, have called for more information to be provided to the public.
New Jersey Sen. Jon Bramnick even suggested a limited state of emergency to ban all drones until answers are provided. Others, such as Rep. Nicole Malliotakis and Rep. Jeff Van Drew, have called for drone flight restrictions and shooting down unidentified drones if necessary. Legislation has been introduced to increase federal funding for radar technology to track drone activity and federally criminalize illegal drone use.
Despite the ongoing investigation, Gov. Murphy maintains that the drones do not pose a public safety risk, but acknowledges the frustration of the lack of credible information. Lawmakers are united in their efforts to protect the state and ensure public safety as the mystery of the drones continues to unfold.
