Law enforcement is gathering information about the life and recent whereabouts of Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione’s attorney intends to fight his extradition to New York City and plans for his client to plead not guilty to charges in both Pennsylvania and Manhattan. Mangione, an Ivy League graduate, was arrested in Pennsylvania after being recognized from surveillance images released by the NYPD. He was found with a fake ID, a gun, a 3D-printed silencer, and written admissions about the crime. Investigators are exploring whether a possible back injury and insurance claims motivated the killing. Mangione’s friends in Hawaii indicated he had chronic pain and had posted X-rays showing surgery on social media. Law enforcement agencies across the country are on alert for copycats targeting executives in the wake of the Thompson killing. A bulletin in Colorado warned of potential threats against health care companies and urged companies to review security measures. In Chicago, signs with messages matching those found at the scene of the shooting were displayed, and “Kill your CEO” was sprayed on the walls of businesses. The police are investigating these incidents.
