A UK-based Substack writer, Gurwinder Bhogal, recently described his interactions with suspected CEO shooter Luigi Mangione as positive and kind, despite the violent crime he is accused of committing. Bhogal corresponded extensively with Mangione, discussing his mixed political views and concerns about future humanity. Mangione, a computer programmer now accused of killing United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, expressed opposition to wokeism and interest in evidence-based compassion like effective altruism. He also engaged in political discussions with Bhogal around articles related to Ted Kaczynski and healthcare.
Mangione, a University of Pennsylvania graduate, was arrested in Pennsylvania after fleeing from New York City. Bhogal described him as genuinely one of the nicest people he had ever met, expressing bewilderment at the news of his arrest. Despite his positive interactions with Mangione, Bhogal’s impression of him stands in stark contrast to the portrait that has emerged since his capture, suggesting that Mangione veered away from a promising future due to back problems that left him unable to have sex. Despite the shocking turn of events, Bhogal still remembers Mangione as a thoughtful and polite individual, highlighting the complexity of human behavior and the difficulty in predicting violent actions.
