Pro-EU protests in Georgia reach 12th day with thousands rallying | Politics News

Thousands of protesters in Georgia continue to demand a new vote and a return to European integration as they took to the streets for the 12th consecutive day. The protests were sparked by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s decision to shelve EU accession talks after disputed elections. The demonstrations have been met with a tough police response, including the use of tear gas and water cannons, leading to the arrests of over 400 people.

Despite the crackdown, the protesters show no signs of backing down as they gathered outside parliament in Tbilisi on Monday. Some demonstrators held banners calling for “Less Russia is more freedom” while others blew horns and whistles to express their discontent. The protests have triggered outrage both domestically and internationally, with mounting condemnation over the government’s handling of the situation.

In a symbolic gesture, the city finished setting up a giant Christmas tree outside parliament, removing photos of individuals reportedly beaten by police and protest flyers that were previously hung on the tree’s metallic framework. As the political crisis in Georgia shows no signs of abating, the protesters are determined to continue their fight for a new vote and a return to European integration.
