Manhattan prosecutors have charged 26-year-old Luigi Mangione with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown last week. Mangione was located in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where he was taken into custody and found in possession of a 3D-printed pistol similar to the one used in the shooting, along with a silencer and fake IDs.
Mangione faces charges of murder in the second degree, illegal gun possession, and possession of a forged instrument in Manhattan, on top of the charges he faces in Pennsylvania. His extradition to New York will depend on whether the Pennsylvania judge decides to hold an extradition hearing.
Mangione reportedly expressed animosity towards corporate America in a manifesto detailing his alleged motives for the shooting. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2020 and attended an all-boys private high school in Baltimore. Despite having ties to San Francisco and recently living in Honolulu, he had no prior arrest history in New York.
The NYPD continues to investigate the case, as more details about Mangione’s background and motives emerge. Information about his lawyer was not immediately available. This is a developing story that will be updated as more information becomes available.
