A 26-year-old man, Luigi Mangione, has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City. Mangione was apprehended in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a customer at a McDonald’s recognized him from media coverage. He was found in possession of a handwritten document that indicated his “motivation and mindset”. Mangione appeared in court, where he was charged with several offenses including forgery and carrying firearms without a license. A homicide charge from New York is expected to be filed soon.
Investigators used various resources, including digital surveillance systems, drones, and police dogs, to search for clues before Mangione was ultimately located by a McDonald’s customer. Mangione was found with a fake driver’s license, a 3D-printed pistol, and $10,000 in cash, among other items. It was revealed that he harbored “ill will towards corporate America”, according to Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.
Mangione has ties to various states, having been born and raised in Maryland, with connections to San Francisco and a last known address in Honolulu. He previously worked at TrueCar and had a background in data engineering and video game development. Friends had reportedly been trying to reach him, with concerns raised about his whereabouts. Thompson was fatally shot outside a hotel in Midtown Manhattan, with investigators believing it was a pre-planned killing based on evidence found at the scene. The investigation is ongoing, with Mangione facing extradition to New York following his arrest.
