Luigi Nicholas Mangione, the suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO, has been arraigned on firearm and forgery charges in Pennsylvania. He was arrested at a McDonald’s on Monday morning and charged with forgery, carrying firearms without a license, tampering with records, possessing an instrument of crime, and providing false identification.
Police officers Tyler Frye and a colleague recognized Mangione at the McDonald’s and arrested him. Blair County district attorney Peter Weeks stated in court that Mangione had a passport and $10,000 in cash, including foreign currency. Authorities are analyzing electronic devices found on him and trying to retrace his recent movements in New York and Pennsylvania.
Mangione initially cooperated but is now refusing to cooperate further. It is unclear if he has any accomplices. Allegations of him being hailed as a hero online have been denounced by Pennsylvania governor Josh Shapiro, who emphasized that killing someone over policy differences is unacceptable. Shapiro commended the individual who alerted law enforcement about Mangione’s presence at the McDonald’s.
Further updates from the NYPD and Altoona police department are expected, and New York is planning to file charges against Mangione soon. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to ensure justice is served for the murder of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO.
