Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old man charged with murder in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO, Brian Thompson in New York City, was arrested at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania. He was found in possession of a ghost gun and a handwritten document indicating ill will towards corporate America. Mangione was born in Maryland and attended a prestigious all-boys high school where he was valedictorian. He later graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with degrees in computer science and founded a video game development club. He was employed as a data engineer for TrueCar but had not worked there since 2023.
Investigators found writings on the shell casings at the crime scene suggesting a motive related to criticizing corporate America, specifically the tactics used by healthcare insurers. Mangione had suffered from back pain and appeared to have an interest in books related to the healthcare system, including one written by the Unabomber.
