In the weeks leading up to Donald Trump’s second term, Vice President-elect JD Vance is missing while Elon Musk, the world’s richest person and largest donor to Trump’s re-election campaign, is seen frequently with Trump. Musk has joined Trump on his private plane, attended a SpaceX launch, and spent Thanksgiving at Mar-a-Lago with the president-elect. Musk’s role extends beyond being a friend, as he is also a major donor and co-leader of a new Department of Government Efficiency aimed at reducing government spending. Musk and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy met with Republican lawmakers to discuss cutting government spending and firing federal workers through this department.
Musk spent $277 million in political contributions during the election, with the majority going to his super PAC to support Trump and oppose Vice President Kamala Harris. Musk plans to continue funding his super PAC to challenge Republican lawmakers who do not support Trump’s agenda in the midterms.
Despite Musk’s growing influence within the Trump campaign and administration, there are concerns about his constant presence and strain on longtime advisors. However, for now, Musk’s outsized role seems secure as he participates in important calls and travels with Trump. It remains to be seen how long Musk’s influence will last in Trump’s second term.
