Police are investigating a shooting that occurred on Canal Street in Lower Manhattan on Friday afternoon, leaving one man injured. The incident took place at the intersection of Canal and Church streets just after 1 p.m. The motive behind the shooting is unknown at this time.
According to witnesses, the shooter, described as “paranoid,” was not a resident of the area but had come to check on friends. The victim, who was shot in the back, was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition. The suspect fled the scene and has not been apprehended.
Local business owners and residents expressed shock and sadness over the shooting, with one shop owner recognizing the victim as a regular customer. While shootings and homicides are rare in the area, this incident adds to the small number of violent crimes reported in the 1st Precinct this year.
This shooting comes on the heels of another violent incident in the Financial District where a 17-year-old boy was fatally stabbed on Thursday night. The police investigation into both cases is ongoing.
As more information becomes available, the story will be updated.
