The oldest known bird in the world, Wisdom, who is a Laysan albatross, has laid an egg at approximately 74 years old. This event occurred at the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge in the Hawaiian Archipelago with a new partner. Wisdom has laid between 50 and 60 eggs in her lifetime, with her first eggs being laid in the 1950s. Despite not breeding until they are five years old, Wisdom has managed to raise 30 chicks in her life. The father of the current egg appears to be content on the nest during his incubation shift, leading researchers to be optimistic that the egg will hatch successfully. Wisdom’s previous mate, Akeakamai, has not been seen in recent years. The average lifespan of Laysan albatrosses is around 68 years. Jonathan Plissner, a wildlife biologist at the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, described the event as a “special joy” and it is a notable moment for researchers and bird enthusiasts alike.
