Qatar, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia have condemned Israel’s recent seizure of land in Syria near the Golan Heights, as Israeli military airstrikes continue across the country. Saudi Arabia criticized Israel for violating international law and hindering Syria’s security and territorial integrity. Baghdad also condemned Israel for violating international law and called on the UN Security Council to take action.
Israel seized a buffer zone in the Golan Heights separating it from Syrian-controlled areas after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel’s control over the Golan Heights is permanent and thanked US President-elect Donald Trump for recognizing their sovereignty over the territory. However, this move has been criticized by the UN and other international bodies for violating agreements with Syria.
Israeli forces have been carrying out airstrikes across Syria since al-Assad’s ouster, with reports of attacks on airbases, military assets, and other sites. The intensifying strikes aim to weaken Syria’s military capabilities. The Israeli military usually does not claim responsibility for these attacks. The UN has raised concerns about the escalating violence and called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
