Storm Darragh caused widespread damage across the UK, leaving tens of thousands of homes without power and disrupting train lines. Two men tragically lost their lives when trees fell on their vehicles during the storm, which also led to hundreds of flood alerts across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
As many as 66,000 people were still without power more than 24 hours after the storm hit, with the Energy Networks Association stating that it was too dangerous for their staff to reach some communities. A man from Gwynedd, north Wales, described his experience of being without power for days due to the storm’s impact on his area.
Tributes were paid to the men who lost their lives in separate incidents during the storm, and flood warnings and alerts remained in place across England and Wales. The railway network also faced significant disruptions, with cancellations and delays impacting train services.
The Met Office predicted that the weather would calm down in the coming days, but some blustery showers were still expected. The aftermath of Storm Darragh serves as a reminder of the need for preparedness in the face of extreme weather events due to climate change.
